In Roxane II, Viviane Sassen and her muse Roxane continue writing their shared visual journal. The dynamic gallery of poses and moods touches notes at times sensual, at times tender. Images are equally about the performances in front of and behind the camera: Sassen’s presence is perceived through her shadow and made tangible by scraps of paper that bear the imprint of her breasts. This is a mutual portrait, an exchange in which the artist’s and model’s individualities blur, leaving traces on each other.

As Maria Barnas writes in the poem introducing the images: “When I take a glance at our selves I hold my breath and see us expand in colours and clouds bursting from a mouth. Are they yours or mine?”

ETAN & ME is a story of love and loss, of Eros and Thanatos. It’s a story about the exploration of the Self and the Other. Are we ever able to truly know someone, to truly know ourselves?

These are the question which come to mind when looking at the latest book of renowned artist / photographer Viviane Sassen. In a remote village in the jungle of Suriname, she took portraits of this young man called Etan and combined them with blurred and scattered self-portraits, reflecting on the ancient myths of Narcissus and the Origin of Painting by Pliny the Elder.

‘Roxane’ is a visual journal intime by photographer Viviane Sassen. Roxane’s body and expressions follow the artist’s direction in a sequence of poses and moods collected over a number of years. The viewer is offered a glimpse of Sassen’s creative process through the relationship between the photographer and her muse.

UMBRA delves into the world of shadows. A darkness that is seductive and deceptive.
A darkness that lies in every human soul, as a still black lake with a surface flat as a mirror that can not be but shattered.

UMBRA is, naturally, also the story of light, from its blinding qualities to its brittle brightness. The ever conflicting pull of light and darkness kicked off the quest for imagery of what can not be contained: a world continuously in motion, the mind unable to decide which direction to take. Shadow, eventually, as a force of life, and not only the negation of light.

Viviane Sassen and Maria Barnas shared their interests in the darker sides of life, in this publication that shines with lucidity.

‘The Widest Prairies’ features a new series by Charlotte Dumas on the wild horses of Nevada, showing a cinematographic portrayal of these undomesticated animals as they roam the fringes of the foothills into the residential areas of the desert population where peoples and animals paths cross.

This proximity has created new interactions between man and animal and has changed perceptions of the wild horses.

They’ve become a strong topic of discussion as their situation becomes more dire due to draught and the economical climate yet seem to prevail in the ever changing landscape.

The most recent publication from the award-winning photographer Pieter Hugo bears unflinching witness to a landscape still scarred by genocide 10 years after the fact. Under Hugo’s deferential gaze, it is not the visceral horrors that shock, but the lingering ephemera of everyday life that haunt the periphery.

Published for the first time in a limited edition of 500 and accompanied by a specially commissioned essay from investigative journalist Linda Melvern, Rwanda 2004: Vestiges of a Genocide offers a forensic exposition of tragedy that spares us the burden of judgment – but confronts us instead with far more frightening questions about our own humanity.

Pieter Hugo’s There’s a Place in Hell for Me & My Friends is a series of close-up portraits of the artist and his friends, all of whom call South Africa home.

Through a digital process of converting colour images to black and white while manipulating the colour channels, Hugo emphasizes the pigment (melanin) in his sitters’ skins so they appear heavily marked by blemishes and sun damage. The resulting portraits are the antithesis of the airbrushed images that determine the canons of beauty in popular culture, and expose the contradictions of racial distinctions based on skin colour.

As the critic Aaron Schuman writes, “although at first glance we may look ‘black’ or ‘white’, the components that remain ‘active’ beneath the surface consist of a much broader spectrum. What superficially appears to divide us is in fact something that we all share, and like these photographs, we are not merely black and white – we are red, yellow, brown, and so on; we are all, in fact, coloured.”

Build in 1600, The Bridge of Sighs known as ‘Ponte dei Sospiri’ by Venetians, connects the Doges’s Palace interrogation rooms to the prison. The name comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their last view of the world before their imprisonment or their execution.

Chad Moore’s Bridge of Sighs refers to the New York’s Bridge of Sighs, located at ‘The Tombs’ near the artist’s studio. This new album of combined portraits and landscapes, introduce a new language of the artist: silence and contemplativeness. A translation of his errant experiences in the city. The result, is a resonant representation of the despair provided by the city to his characters and to himself. Perhaps it is the last sighs of a youth, full of dreams and beauty, as per the last sigh of the convicts crossing that famous bridge.

Years later a popular legend of the Bridge of Sighs tell that lovers who will pass under the bridge in Venice will reach eternal love and bliss. Chad Moore’s Bridge of Sighs become a tale of transcendence. There is great value for Moore in simple joy, passion, energy, boredom, sadness, tenderness and sexuality. He finds that this chaotic context allows him to express those things in himself, and that the eternal quest of love is the meaningful answer to the innocence lost.

Biography

Born in 1987 in Tampa, Florida. Chad Moore lives in New York since 2008. Moore had solo shows in New York, Antwerp, Paris, and Amsterdam as well as international group shows, including the Foam Museum.
